The Alabama Shakespeare Project (ASP) welcomes applications from undergraduate researchers to undertake projects related to sixteenth- and seventeenth-century plays, particularly those a part of our current season. This may include any one or combination of the following: * dramaturgical research, such as the history and context of a specific play; script cutting and editing; pre- and post-show presentations; lobby audience engagement installations; rehearsal support; &c. * devise original music or choreography informed by the specific needs of a play. * develop and carry out ethnographic research exploring players’ and playgoers’ experience with and reactions to Renaissance stage technologies, including designing surveys, interviews, and other data-gathering instruments. * manage a social media and marketing campaign, including developing and designing print media and flyers; digital materials including our web-based research blog (Tiring House) and Twitter profile (@AlabamaShax); interactive items for performance; &c. * or other proposed project that aligns in some way with ASP’s mission. ASP is a performance-based research collective exploring early modern entertainments. To sponsor this trans-disciplinary and collaborative work, we stage free readings of the plays by William Shakespeare and his contemporaries, performed by University of Alabama undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and community members; facilitate performance-based research projects and experiments led by graduate students and faculty in the Hudson Strode Program in Renaissance Studies (strode.english.ua.edu); and collaborate with art-makers and scholars in the American southeast in conditions digital and live Learn more about ASP and our current season at AlabamaShax.org. Students may undertake this work for course credit, including UA 156, EN 429, or in tandem with a capstone project for the English Honors program (english.ua.edu/undergraduate-studies/honors) or minor in Medieval and Early Modern European Studies (memes.as.ua.edu). Opportunities to stay on with this lab after the completion of the course credit period may also be available. We welcome performers and researchers from all backgrounds, identities, and communities.
