Lactation Lab Research Assistant

This Research Assistant position is a voluntary (unpaid) position, although in some rare occasions it may be tied to course credit after discussion with the Lab Director (Dr. Jen Nickelson).  There are expectations that the Research Assistant will participate in weekly meetings, give research and educational presentations to others in the lab, and conduct supervised research outside of our weekly meetings.  This is a great opportunity to gain research skills and learn more about breastfeeding and infant nutrition.  You do not need to have any experience conducting research to apply for the position....

Cell culture and metabolic products analysis, solid surface engineering and thin film material deposition

This interdisciplinary project aims to explore a new concept of using biological process (cell culture) to enable metal thin film deposition and device fabrication. It comprises three aspects, 1) study of biological process to see how the cell culture condition controls the cell growth and metabolic products formation; and 2) study of the metal film deposition process to see how we can modify the substrate to control the film growth; 3) combine the above two aspects using the bio-metabolism products to enable and control the metal thin film growth. This research position focuses the 2nd aspect, studying the metal deposition in relation to substrate and process. Strong interest is required, and some related background are preferred...

How presidential political ads use (and misuse) news-mediated evidence

Political ads often make statements that reference a news story, because third-party evidence is more credible than other sorts of statements. But sometimes, those ads don't always tell the truth about what the original evidence really says. Since 2008, we've coded hundreds of presidential spots that contain news-mediated evidence, and then found the original stories cited in those ads, and then determined whether what the ad says matches what the news evidence says. (So far, we've found that news stories are "misued" about a third of the time.) And now it's time for 2024 presidential ads. We're looking for help to find and download presidential campaign ads that refer to news-mediated evidence. Then we need help to find the original n...

Suicidal Ideation and Close Relationships

The SPAIR Lab is currently focused on studying how close relationships impact suicidal ideation in adult populations. The SPAIR Lab uses both primary and secondary data, most of which consists of online surveys. The goal of the SPAIR Lab is to identify both risk and protective factors associated with close relationships to be incorporated into suicide prevention efforts. Close relationships studied include romantic relationships, family members, pets/animal companions, and greater sense of belonging in larger contexts. This is an unpaid position with an expectation of approximately 3-5 hours per week. A minimum of one academic year is required for participation in the lab. Common tasks for undergraduate research assistants include: ...
